History of the Organisation

A Muslim orphanage for boys in Kandy was felt a great need considering the influx of large number of Muslim orphans due to the conflict situation in the Country.  They are left as destitutes either in the remand prisons or in the streets due to lack of parental care, love and control.

To arrest and control this pathetic situation, our Founder President, Marhoom S.M. Zavahir (Advocate – Attorney at Law ) and a Team of educated and public spirited men from Kandy met and discussed on 16th April, 2006 the modalities of forming a Muslim orphanage in line with the Muslim law (Shariah).

Progress of the Organisation

Within a short period of five months all the logistical work in forming the Orphanage called the “Rawzul Islam Orphanage – Kandy” was completed and a duly adopted Constitution for the Orphanage was in place and the general objectives therein are, inter alia:

  1. to foster, cherish and love needy Muslim orphans according to the tenets of Islamic Sharia,
  2. to promote the Islamic way of life amongst such orphans by imparting religious knowledge to them,
  3. to educate such orphans,
  4. to construct, maintain, manage, establish and promote orphanages, homes, hospitals, dispensaries, clinics, vocational and secular training centres, to house and serve such orphans until they are meaningfully employed or they reach the age of majority whichever comes first.

Assistance to orphans

The first batch of twenty needy and poor orphans were selected and were enrolled for assistance effective September, 2006 at the inaugural ceremony held on the 09th September, 2006 presided over by the Honourable Minister of Transport and Petroleum Development, Alhaj A.H.M. Fowzie and with the participation of Honourable Governors of the Western and Central Provinces, the Lord Mayor of Kandy and many other distinguished guests.  Since then we have increased the number of orphans to twenty five on roll for assistance.

Till we get established with the land and permanent infra-structures for a residential orphanage, these orphans are for the present kept on their own homes and environments under the guidance of their guardians. Their needs are looked after through donations received from sponsors on a monthly basis. Regular meetings are held to monitor their progress.
